The United States government established the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) to develop the next generation of African leaders who will influence business and entrepreneurship, civil society leadership, and public sector management in Africa.

Conditions for Eligibility

Young West African leaders who fit the following requirements are eligible to compete for the YALI Regional Leadership Center West Africa on a merit basis.

  • Are citizens and residents of one of the following nations: Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Liberia, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and Burkina Faso. Are between the ages of 18 and 35 at the time the application is submitted.

  • neither citizens nor lawful permanent residents of the United States.

  • Are capable of reading, writing, hearing, and speaking English, and Are eligible to get any required visa for Ghana.

  • Enterprise and Business

  • This program caters to a wide spectrum of aspiring or developing business executives who hope to establish their own companies on the continent or assume leadership positions in the private sector.

Public Sector Management

Those who assist the public through volunteerism, community service, or involvement in non-governmental groups are the target audience for this track.

Governance and Management

People who work in or want to work in any level of government (including elected positions), regional organizations like the African Union or the West Africa Community, international organizations like the United Nations, or other publicly minded organizations or think tanks are the target audience for this track.

Participants will get certificates at the program’s conclusion and will join the YALI Alumni.To prepare participants for leadership responsibilities in their various efforts, participants will go through several leadership training programs.

Benefits

All of the following costs will be covered by the program if you are chosen to take part in the YALI West Africa Emerging Leaders Program:

  • Accra visas (if necessary)

  • travel from your nation of citizenship* to Accra, Ghana, round-trip

  • All non-Ghanaian participants must be transported to and from the Kotoka International Airport to the YALI Regional Leadership Center in Accra, West Africa.

  • For Ghanaians, transportation will be provided from your home to the YALI Regional Leadership Center, West Africa – Accra.

  • individualized academic and leadership training;

  • The course’s accident and illness benefit plan

  • Housing and food Only if you live in one of the nations covered by the YALI Regional Leadership Center, West Africa – Accra, will the Program pay for your travel expenses to and from Ghana. If you live beyond the designated area, YALI will only cover the cost of transportation to and from Accra from your country of citizenship; all other costs must be paid by you.

Selection Standards:

A merit-based, open competition will be used to choose candidates for the YALI Regional Leadership Center West Africa. A selection panel will examine each eligible application. Before a final decision is made and an invitation to join the program is sent, chosen semi-finalists will be interviewed.

The following factors will be used by selection panels to assess applications:

  • demonstrated leadership in business and entrepreneurship, public service, or community involvement.

  • Active participation in volunteerism, mentoring, or public or community service.

  • the capacity to respect others’ perspectives and cooperate in a variety of groups.

  • solid interpersonal and communication abilities.

  • a vibrant, upbeat outlook.

  • knowledge, interest, and expertise in the chosen area or career route, as well as

  • a promise to use what you’ve learned about leadership to help your country and/or community after the program.
