The Wikimedia Alliances Fund 2023 provides funding to mission-aligned organisations that operate in underserved geographic areas and communities and may collaborate with the Wikimedia Movement to promote each other’s work.

The Wikimedia Alliances Fund 2023 assists groups that can further the Wikimedia Movement’s strategic goals, particularly those that advance knowledge equity. We place a strong emphasis on the necessity of historically marginalised and underrepresented people in the movement having access to the tools they need to achieve their objectives. The support of contributors, editors, content, awareness, skill-building programmes, advocacy activities, strategic planning, and the establishment of enduring connections with regional Wikimedia communities and Wikimedia projects can all be the focus of programmes from mission-aligned organisations and groups.

Eligibility

Organisations in underrepresented or emerging communities with missions in line with the Wikimedia movement who have a proposal to work closely with the Wikimedia Community and/or Wikimedia projects. The organisations must have established networks and/or a history of success within the movement.

Will businesses that are for profit be able to receive funding?

Working with nonprofit organisations is our main priority. We are aware that some mission-driven organisations have chosen to use other organisational models, but we want to make sure we have the chance to evaluate how well their plans will have an impact. Support Provided

As a new funding category, we want to make sure that candidates receive the assistance they need to be successful.
Potential applicants must email the Alliances Fund Programme Officer (alliances_fund(AT)wikimedia.org) before submitting an application to ensure alignment and suitability for the new fund. The opportunity for 2 hours of proposal development support will then be given to applicants.
The regional committee will review and decide on the application after it has been filed.
Before submitting a new request for financing, we advise returning grantees to finish their final report and have their final discussion with their programme officer.

Application

It is advised that organisations making an application for the Wikimedia Alliances Fund have an advisor from the local wiki community who can help with the creation and implementation of the plan.
The following assistance would be provided to applicants throughout the proposal-development process by the Wikimedia Alliances Fund Programme Officer:
Describe the background and setting of nearby Wikimedia communities.Support in utilising Wiki platforms, such as meta and email lists for (reporting and documentation), including the drafting and amendment of applicationsintroductions to potential collaborators in the community
