The Commonwealth Sustainable Energy Transition (CSET) Children and Youth Challenge 2023 is now accepting applications. To complete the tasks we complete each day, we require energy. However, did you know that the majority of the energy we consume originates from resources that will deplete until we discover new methods to produce it without endangering the planet?

The Commonwealth Sustainable Energy Transition is looking for suggestions from kids and teenagers on how to use and teach about sustainable energy in our communities in a way that is engaging and simple to understand. The Commonwealth is committed to supporting youth and assisting them in paving the road for a better future for all.

Categories

There are altogether three categories:

  • Category A: Children and young people’s creative and innovative uses of, or instruction in, sustainable energy in their communities:

  • Find examples of creative strategies that help your community use more sustainable energy or raise awareness of it.

  • Be a reporter and document your chosen example with pictures and notes.

  • Put the illustration into a brief tale.

  • Category B: Children and young people’s technology innovations or solutions that use or support sustainable energy:

  • Take a picture of an energy-related issue affecting your neighborhood.

  • Examine how using energy that is clean, renewable, and sustainable (such as sunlight, wind, and water) can help.

  • Test your solution and keep a log of how it is working (what you did, the results, and what you learned).

  • Category C: Examples or case studies of top techniques and tools for enlightening and involving local populations in sustainable energy. All official and informal educators (of any age) are welcome to submit their best methods and instructional materials under Category C:

  • Determine the strategies and resources that persuade your community to learn about sustainable energy sources.

  • Gather evidence of your sessions (by documenting your methods in writing, recording a video, or gathering the resources you employ).

Prizes

  • The Commonwealth Secretariat will present certificates to each recipient. One winning entry from each of the five Commonwealth regions—Africa, Asia, Europe, Canada, the Caribbean, and Pacific—will have the opportunity to present their ideas online to local policymakers and governments, with the possibility of implementation, pending funding and the viability of the proposed solutions.

  • One (1) representative of the overall winning entry in the age 15–17 category will be given the opportunity to attend the UNFCCC COP 28 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, as part of the grand prize.

Eligibility

There are a total of three categories. Category C is for educators of any age who teach their community about sustainable energy. Categories A and B are for people aged 7 to 17 years old.

Everyone on the team must be a citizen of a Commonwealth member state.Individual entries fall under categories A and C. For successful submissions, Category B will require a team (minimum three persons).Children and teenagers from the following age ranges (inclusive, and as of 31 August 2023) must lead submissions for Category A and B: 7 to 10 years old; 11 to 14 years old; and 15 to 17 years old.submit only unique content. All submissions must be the applicant(s)’ original work.
