The goal of the Africa Fact-checking Fellowship – #AFFCameroon is to monitor and record social media viral trends pertaining to the present problems with “fake news” in Cameroon. The goal of #AFFCameroon is to develop the expertise of seasoned professionals through its many cohorts so they can successfully fight hate speech and disinformation to promote social cohesion and peace.It aims to support data journalism, fact-checking, and digital rights for African journalists, bloggers, and content producers.

The curriculum is built on a blended learning strategy that includes webinars, hands-on training, peer-to-peer learning, and actual fieldwork. A wealth of online tools and resources as well as a global network of experts and professionals will be available to fellows.

Since 2016, the dispute between Anglophones in the North and South West Regions and the nation’s post-election instability in 2018 have crystallised public discourse and escalated the consumption and dissemination of “fake news” in traditional and internet media. Despite the efforts of numerous parties, the situation surrounding tribalist attacks and their offshoots is reaching frightening dimensions.

However, the media has long practised fact-checking. Due to the prevalence of fake news on social media, there has been a rise in the verification of online information and public statements in recent years. Online and offline media both underreport on this intention to stop the spread of disinformation online.

This setting is where #defyhatenow is used. The Africa Fact-checking Fellowship-#AFFCameroon programme, which has been running for the past three years, aims to give professionals the fact-checking skills they need to spot online misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation. The fellowship has directly benefited eight cohorts totaling about 145 professionals from the Centre, Littoral, South-West, North-West, Adamawa, North, and West Regions.

After that, #defyhatenow The ninth professional cohort in Cameroon will accept applications from October 2023 to December 2023. Establishing a critical mass of fact-checkers, supporters of accurate information, opponents of online and off-line hate speech, and defenders of digital rights is the goal.

Requirements

  • Reporters,

  • Advocates and/or campaigners for digital rights

  • A neighborhood-based organisation

  • Community leaders and opinion makers

Age

  • Between the ages of 20 and 40Eligibility

  • Conditions in all areas of Cameroon

  • Throughout the training, be accessible.

  • Comprehend both French and English

  • Possess a functioning laptop and smartphone

  • Possess computer literacy,

  • Social media handles that are active.
