2023 WFP Innovation Challenge

Deadline: Ongoing | 2023 WFP Innovation Challenge

Apply for access to the world’s largest humanitarian organization, coaching, and funding of up to US $100,000 equity-free.One in ten people on the planet, or over 828 million people, still go to bed hungry every night. A record high 349 million people now experience severe food insecurity, up from 135 million in 2019. In the meantime, rising food and fuel prices have caused the expense of providing food aid to reach previously unheard-of heights. Millions of people are now unable to get food due to rising costs for food and transportation, which have been made worse by the economic effects of the pandemic, climate change, and the situation in Ukraine. This has a substantial impact on WFP’s operations.

We run a number of themed Innovation Challenge campaigns each year. We invite people to apply with creative solutions to these problems. In order to accept and review applications often throughout the year, we also offer a rolling application process. Please keep an eye out for any specific challenges or submit your project for rolling assessment.

How We Choose Inventions

Applications submitted to the WFP Innovation Accelerator are evaluated by both WFP and outside experts using a predetermined set of criteria. Please be aware that in order to ensure impact and maximize cost effectiveness, we give priority to projects that are created with our target audience in mind—vulnerable communities—and that demonstrate early traction and market validation. We are seeking inventions that live up to the following standards:

  • Time to provide effect, technology maturity, and user traction, as well as the ability to achieve Zero Hunger Feasibility, will all have an influence on the people we serve.

  • Quantity of innovation

  • Financial viability with a convincing business case independent of WFP funding

  • Strength, expertise, and dedication of the team

You’re interested but don’t think your idea is quite ready. Never let this deter you! Applications are accepted continuously throughout the year, so those submitted after this cutoff date may still be taken into consideration for programs beginning in 2023.
